MYTHBUSTER: Crunches for Abs?!

Crunches are probably the most popular core exercise of the modern gym scene, but do they actually do anything?!

In this video, Coaches Dan & Rach argue that there are much better exercises to build a strong core and burn fat than crunches.

Everyone HAS abs.

But the theory of spot-reducing fat must go.

The old saying “Abs are built in th kitchen” means that if you want to SEE your abs, you need to follow the right diet, probably a caloric deficit and definitely no junk foods that make you bloat.

We don’t know what planet those influencers who say you can eat donuts and still reach your goals are from, but if you’re serious about your health & fitness goals, ditch the donuts and the crunches in favour of these 3 things:

1. get a nutrition plan & macros template to match your body composition (like an InBody Scan) and your goals & activity level

2. Lift weights and train full-body functional fitness to work your core every day

3. build as much muscle as possible to boost your metabolism and burn off excess fat so you can see the big strong abs you built.

Sounds simple enough, right?

There are a few other things that you may have to navigate, and we break them down in this video as well:

  • the body fat difference between men & women
  • people who look good with their shirt off but are actually weak
  • the importance of core strength for everything
  • Rach’s favourite core strengthening exercise
  • Dan’s favourite way to finish a workout with different types of core work
  • athlete-specific core work for sports
  • using gymnastics skills to build and train the core
  • the theory of progressive overload
  • the importance of consistency in training & nutrition
  • bloating: common causes & a quick fix
