Why You Don’t Need to Be an Elite Athlete to Compete

When most people hear the word “competing,” they picture stadium lights, sponsored gear, and elite athletes moving impossible amounts of weight without breaking a sweat

It’s easy to look on Instagram and think, “That’s not for me. I’m just trying to get through my work week, keep up with my kids, and not feel broken.”

The truth is, competing in CrossFit isn’t about standing on a podium or proving you’re the fittest person in the room. It’s about testing your own limits, building confidence, and showing up for yourself and your team/fam.

And we do that every day at Radix.

You don’t need a six-pack, a 300-pound deadlift, or years of training to get in on the action. You just need the willingness to step up to the white board.

How Do Daily CrossFit Workouts Help You Compete Every Day?

The #1 place our members compete is right on the gym floor during our daily CrossFit group classes, and it’s against themselves, not each other.

Every daily Workout of the Day (WOD) offers a controlled, supportive environment to test your fitness.

  • Competing Against Yesterday’s Version of You: You aren’t racing the person next to you; you’re competing against your own previous scores, your personal movement mechanics, and your internal urge to quit when the workout gets tough. That’s the real training.
  • Scalable for Every Level: Whether you’re a beginner learning barbell fundamentals in Foundations or a seasoned athlete, every movement and weight can be scaled to fit your exact fitness level.
  • Periodized and Progressive: By following our training cycles, you’ll increase your weights and/or reps each week over the course of 6-8 weeks, test out at the end, and then we all start over with a new series of exercises.
  • Real-Time Accountability: Group classes give you the coaching & community you need to dig a little deeper than you ever would on your own.

What Is The CrossFit Open, and Is It Really for Everyday People?

The CrossFit Open is the largest participatory sporting event on the planet, and it is built specifically so everyone can take part.

For three weeks in late Feb/early March, hundreds of thousands of everyday gym-goers around the world tackle the same workout. The Open offers Scaled and Age-Group divisions, meaning whether you’ve been training for three months or ten years, there is a version of the workout designed specifically for you.

It isn’t about beating the elite athletes on television. It’s about the energy in the room when the clock counts down, hitting a movement you didn’t think you could do, and celebrating with your gym family after pushing past your self-imposed limits.

How Does HYROX Make Competition Accessible?

If you prefer a pure test of endurance and functional strength without complex gymnastics or heavy barbell cycling, events like HYROX have opened the doors to a new type of hybrid competition.

HYROX combines running with accessible functional movements (like sled pushes, rowing, and wall balls). Because there are no technical lifts or strict time cutoffs, anyone can cross the finish line. It gives everyday athletes a tangible, measurable goal to train for throughout the year, keeping their momentum and consistency high, which is really cool.

We’ve been training this way for over a decade, but HYROX puts a fun spin on aerobic capacity/Zone 2 training that we’ve really been enjoying in our Thursday and Saturday workouts.

Ready to Test Yourself? Join Us for Our 11th Anniversary Half-HYROX & BBQ!

Nothing captures the spirit of community and friendly competition quite like a Radix event.

Our Grand Opening party was a 2-day seminar + competition followed by Dan proposing in front of 100+ people 🙂

We missed a few years during COVID, of course, but last year we celebrated our 10th anniversary with 3 CrossFit workouts, and we’re not slowing down anytime soon!

To celebrate our 11th Anniversary, we are hosting a Half-HYROX workout followed by a Family BBQ on Saturday, September 12th!

Whether you want to push your pace, partner up with a buddy, or scale the movements to fit your current fitness level, this event is designed for our entire RadixFam—beginners, seasoned veterans, kids, and parents alike. It’s also perfect preparation for anyone competing in the Oct 4th event in Toronto, so you don’t have to be a Radix member to participate! Afterward, we’ll hang out, eat some great food, and celebrate eleven years of real community and real results.
